Planting Shrubs: Learn the Basics

Planting rose bush

Shrubs play an important part in landscape design. Not only are they an attractive addition to any garden, but they serve a practical purpose, too. Well-placed shrubs can define property boundaries, provide privacy, and hide unsightly air-conditioning units, trash cans, and utility meters. Read on to learn the basics of planting shrubs.

Prune the Branches

Before planting, avoid crowding by thinning out up to half the branches on your shrub with pruning shears. Examine your plant for dead branches and remove them as well.

Soak the Roots

Avoid planting a dehydrated shrub by soaking its roots. Bare-root shrubs should be washed clean and submerged in water for a few hours before planting.

Dig a Hole

Measure your shrub’s rootball or container and dig a hole slightly deeper than the rootball or precisely the depth of the container. Score the sides and bottom of the hole to avoid compaction. This allows the roots to absorb water and grow.

Plant the Shrub

Hold the shrub by the rootball and place it into the hole, ensuring that the trunk is straight and the root crown is level to the soil. If planting a potted shrub, cut the container on both sides to remove it. Once the shrub is in the hole, loosen the roots at the surface of the rootball to encourage them to grow out.

Backfill the Soil

Gradually fill the hole with soil to surround the roots of the shrub. Tamp (gently pack) the soil to eliminate and prevent air pockets as you go. Continue filling the hole until it reaches ground level and a slight mound has formed around the base of the trunk and cover the area with a 2″ layer of mulch.

Soak the Soil

Upon planting your shrub, give the soil a thorough soaking with a hose. Continue soaking twice a week for about a year to help your shrub become established.
