Mowing Basics: Helpful Grass Cutting Tips
Posted
March 23, 2017
Proper mowing techniques are a necessary part of maintaining a healthy, attractive lawn. Regular mowing trims away the older tips of grass blades, promotes a deep root system, and helps prevent lawn disease. Whether you’re a new homeowner with your first lawn or a long-time mower who needs to brush up on the basics, here are some grass cutting tips to remember this growing season.
Mow High
Mowing high is lawn mowing 101 (just keep in mind that every grass type has different cutting requirements during different times of year). The general rule of thumb is to never clip off more than 1/3 of the grass blades in a single cutting, so set your mower height accordingly. Here are just a few of the many benefits of mowing high:
- Taller grass tends to develop a deeper root system.
- Higher grass chokes out weed growth more effectively.
- Tall grass shades the soil, helping retain water reserves for the roots.
- Tall grass is less vulnerable to drought and heat damage.
Alternate Mowing Patterns
Mowing your grass in one direction repeatedly pushes and bends the blades at one angle, effectively stunting their growth and weakening them. Switch directions every few weeks to encourage tall, straight, healthy blade growth.
Use Sharp Blades
While sharp mower blades deliver a clean, crisp chop, dull mower blades shred and tear at the turf. This results in jagged-looking tears that make your grass more susceptible to the ravages of disease and pests.
Don’t Bag
Bagging might seem like the natural move, since leaving the clippings as they lie can leave your lawn looking a little messy, but avoid the urge to rake them up. Clippings act as mulch by returning nutrients back into the soil. Be sure to sharpen your blades throughout the growing season, especially if you’re routinely mowing over tree roots or branches that might damage your blade.
