Like their name implies, most broadleaf weeds have wider leaves than grass. The veins on the leaves are branched or net-like, and the stems are oval, round, or square. These weeds also may sprout flowers. Some common types of broadleaf weeds include:
- Chickweed
- Chicory
- Clover
- Dandelion
- Thistle
- Violets
Grassy Weeds
You may have guessed, grassy weeds look more like grass, which could make them harder to kill without killing actual grass. Grassy weed leaf blades are narrow with parallel veins. Stems are round or oval. If they have flowers, they will be inconspicuous. Some common types of grassy weeds include:
- Bluegrass
- Ryegrass
- Bermudagrass
- Crabgrass
- Creeping bentgrass
- All types of sedges
Difference Between Broadleaf and Grassy Weeds Control
Your method of weed control will be dependent on the type of weed. Selective weed killers are better for broadleaf weeds because you can easily spot treat your lawn. Non-selective weed killers can be used for grassy weeds, but if not applied carefully, it can kill any other plant it touches. Certain grassy weeds, like crabgrass, have their own weed controlling products on the market.
