Spring is here! The weather is warming and plants around your yard are beginning to bud and bloom. This natural reawakening is a wonderful time to consider what else you want to see in your yard after a dormant winter. Here are some spring planting tips to help make the most of the growing season.
Spring Planting Tips
As the grass gets greener and flowers start to color the landscape, it’s a great time to reconfigure your yard and garden space. Whether you want to plant annuals to brighten the season or perennials that will come back year after year, there are some factors to consider before you start planting.
- Plan your space. Some plants need more room than others. Whether you’re planting smaller trees, flowering shrubs, or spreading plants, you want to make sure each goes in an area with enough sun and space to grow and thrive. Consider the long-term needs of any plant, tree, or shrub. Given the right attention now helps set it up for a successful future.
- Partner plants. There are some plants that benefit from growing around another specific plant. Alternatively, some plants have a tendency to take over an area and can overcrowd others. Learn about which companion plants will best suit your garden.
- Grow what’s native. Certain plants grow better in certain conditions. Choose plants native to your area to ensure they can easily acclimate to the climate and growing conditions.
- Test your soil. Familiarize yourself with your soil conditions to determine how much fertilizer you’ll need and if the structure properly drains. Amend the soil with organic matter to help improve conditions.
- Start seeds indoors. Grow a wider variety of plants by starting some seeds indoors. This way they’re ready to transplant to an outdoor garden once there’s no longer a chance for frost.
- Check the weather. Since there’s still a chance for frost in early spring, plan on planting later in the season to help prevent young seedlings from freezing.
Once you’ve planned and prepped your garden for the season, you and your plants will be in better shape for planting after the last frost. After you’ve planted, make sure your plants get plenty of water, especially in the early growing stages. Regularly monitor for signs of pests and disease. Catching these problems early gives them a better chance of treatment and survival.
